Early Monday morning, South Carolina freshman tight end Caden Ramsey found himself in the Berkeley County jail. The 19-year-old was arrested by Moncks Corner police on a charge of racing on a public road, and online records show he was booked at 4:02 a.m. A bond hearing was scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday.
Ramsey, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound tight end from Cross, played just six snaps in the Gamecocks’ season-opening 57-0 victory over Kent State. Head coach Shane Beamer had praised his development, naming him an offensive scout team player of the week.
“We are aware of the situation with freshman tight end Caden Ramsey and take matters like this seriously,” a USC Athletics spokesperson said. “We reserve further comment at this time.” Under typical athletic department policy, any student-athlete arrested faces automatic suspension from team activities, though the university has not confirmed Ramsey’s status.
According to South Carolina state law, racing on a public road includes competing with another vehicle, accelerating rapidly from a stoplight, or modifying a car to prepare for a speed contest. Penalties range from a $200 to $600 fine, two to six months in jail, suspension of a driver’s license, and possible vehicle seizure.
Ramsey was a standout at Cross High School, leading the Trojans to an 11-2 record and a berth in the Class A Lower State championship in 2025. He was also selected to the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas and named to the Class A all-state team by the South Carolina Football Coaches Association.
The full incident report is expected by Sept. 8, and a court date has been set for Nov. 13. Ramsey enrolled at South Carolina in the summer of 2026 and was recognized as the offensive scout team player of the week after the Kent State win. The Gamecocks had Monday off, but the legal case and potential disciplinary action remain unresolved.
