Renowned Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis died on Wednesday at Elpis Hospital in Athens. He was 54 years old. According to initial reports, the cause of death was cardiac arrest.
The alarm was raised from a private internal-medicine clinic in Kolonaki, where Mazonakis had gone. He had suffered a cardiac arrest, and an EKAB paramedic who arrived by motorcycle immediately began CPR. Within minutes, an ambulance transferred him to Elpis Hospital, the nearest on-duty hospital, where doctors continued resuscitation efforts. It was too late. They pronounced him dead.
Mazonakis was one of the most popular singers of his generation, a voice that defined Greek music for decades. He was born in Nikaia in March 1972 and launched his professional career in 1992, at just 20 years old, going on to fill concerts and release hit after hit.
