In a head-scratching rant, a Hollywood actress said at a high-profile gathering of LGBT activists that she wanted her son to be gay.
Actress Camryn Manheim said at a Human Rights Campaign dinner Saturday that she “always wanted a gay son,” remarks that have drawn criticism from conservative commentators online.
Ms. Manheim, best known for her role on “The Practice,” presented the group’s Ally for Equality Award to fellow actress Marcia Gay Harden at HRC’s National Dinner in Washington.
The organization said Ms. Harden was honored as an outspoken ally of the LGBTQ+ community.
In her introduction, Ms. Manheim said Ms. Harden’s three children all align with the LGBTQ+ community, which she said irritates her because she “always wanted a gay son,” Fox News reported.
She said she has photographs of her son, actor Milo Manheim, 25, in high heels and in full drag, and that he knows every musical ever written.
She said she believed she had the matter locked up, but that he is the only straight member of his musical theater company.
Ms. Manheim also recounted a call from Ms. Harden about a decade ago, when Ms. Harden told her that her son had come out as gay.
Ms. Manheim said she told Ms. Harden she was lucky, a line that drew applause from the audience.
About a week later, she said, she was at Ms. Harden’s home for dinner when a package arrived for Ms. Harden’s son containing thigh-high patent leather boots, and she thought Ms. Harden was showing off.
Conservative commentators criticized the remarks on social media, Fox News Digital reported.
