Macao Sets Record National Day Holiday as Visitors Surge to 1.87 Million

MACAO – Macao Special Administrative Region reaffirmed its appeal as a tourism hub over the seven-day National Day holiday, with both average daily and single-day visitor arrivals the highest for any National Day holiday on record, the Macao Government Tourism Office said Thursday.

Daily arrivals averaged 163,000 during the Oct 1-7 holiday, up 15.5 percent from last year’s holiday, and peaked at 210,000 on Oct 4, according to preliminary data. Daily arrivals during Golden Week averaged 163,000, outperforming forecasts by the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), which had projected a daily average of 150,000 visitors.

More than nine in 10 hotel rooms were occupied on average during the holiday, with the occupancy rate rising 3.1 percentage points from last year’s holiday, according to industry figures cited by the office. Holiday attractions included fireworks displays and a carnival featuring food, performances and games, the office said.

Nearly 1.9 million tourists visited Macau during the 13-day extended holiday period encompassing the Mid-Autumn Festival and mainland China’s National Day Golden Week, official figures released today show.

According to data published by the Public Security Police Force (CPSP), more than 1.87 million visitors entered the Special Administrative Region (SAR) between 25 September and 7 October. The period covered the three-day Mid-Autumn Festival alongside the seven-day National Day holiday.

While the CPSP did not break down total arrivals by country or region of origin, MGTO figures for the first five days showed that the vast majority—over 797,500 visitors—originated from mainland China, followed by neighbouring Hong Kong with approximately 85,700 arrivals.

Border checkpoints across Macau recorded more than 9.3 million total crossings (including residents and non-resident travellers) over the 13 days, with 5.32 million movements involving mainland Chinese residents, police noted.

In comparison, Hong Kong welcomed 1.3 million mainland visitors during the first six days of the National Day Golden Week—an 11.6 per cent increase compared to the corresponding period in 2025, according to official data from the Hong Kong Immigration Department.

China’s Golden Week holidays are closely watched as a barometer of consumer sentiment and economic activity, as central authorities seek to boost domestic demand and services consumption following the pandemic recovery phase. Nationwide, Chinese transport authorities had anticipated nearly 2.8 billion passenger trips across the combined holiday frame.

Speaking ahead of the holiday period on 25 September, Vice-Minister of Transport Li Yang told state newspaper People’s Daily that having only three working days between the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day encouraged many travellers to combine their leave into an extended 13-day break, shifting travel patterns and boosting overall mobility across the country.
