Severe Weather Threat Looms Over Midwest and South

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — A dangerous weather pattern is unfolding across the Midwest and parts of the South, bringing summer-like heat and the potential for severe thunderstorms.
As temperatures soar near 90 degrees Fahrenheit in the Midstate, the heat index may push that figure into the low to mid-90s. A First Alert Weather Day has been issued for late Thursday and Friday night due to the risk of strong to severe storms.
Starting Thursday evening, areas in southwestern Kentucky and northwest Tennessee are expected to see the first significant storms. By late Friday afternoon, more widespread severe storms are anticipated from Kentucky to Tennessee, along with damaging winds and heavy rain.
The National Weather Service warns that while hail is less likely, an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt stated that safety remains a priority as crews respond to storm victims.
On Thursday afternoon, thunderstorms can develop, with concerns for damaging winds and heavy rainfall persisting into the evening. Friday’s forecast indicates high humidity and temperatures in the mid to upper 80s, with threats of severe storms continuing into the overnight hours.
In Western Wisconsin, tornadoes touched down as towns like New Richmond and Mayville faced destruction. Emergency responders reported multiple damaged buildings and power outages impacting over 121,000 customers across Minnesota and Wisconsin.
The severe weather alerts are not limited to one region. More than 6 million people in states like Indiana and Tennessee are under a substantial threat, categorized by the Storm Prediction Center as a Level 4 out of 5 for severe storms.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant, especially after dark when storms could arrive, bringing damaging winds and heavy rain. Emergency management encourages residents in affected areas to seek shelter until it is safe.
As the weekend approaches, while Saturday may see some leftover storms in the morning, conditions are expected to clear up in the afternoon for a warmer and pleasant weekend.
