Early Access to Pokémon Destined Rivals Set Begins May 17

SEATTLE, Wash. — The latest expansion of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, titled Destined Rivals, officially launches on May 30, 2025. However, players can get an early look at the set starting May 17, 2025, during special Prerelease events at select retailers.

During these Prerelease events, participants can purchase the Scarlet & Violet—Destined Rivals Build & Battle Box, which includes four booster packs, a 40-card ready-to-play deck, and one of four unique foil promo cards. The promo cards feature Ethan’s Typhlosion, Misty’s Gyarados, Team Rocket’s Tyranitar, and Team Rocket’s Mimikyu.

The Prerelease format allows players to compete with a 40-card deck and four Prize cards, instead of the standard 60-card deck and six Prize cards. This setup facilitates faster matches, which are ideal for new players learning the game and experienced fans exploring new strategies.

Keith Packer, head of Pokémon TCG events, stated, “These Prerelease events offer a fantastic opportunity to engage with the new expansion and gain a first-hand experience of what Destined Rivals brings to the table.”

During the Prerelease, players can expect exciting gameplay with the featured cards. For example, Ethan’s Typhlosion’s Buddy Blast attack can inflict considerable damage based on Ethan’s Adventure cards in the discard pile, while Misty’s Gyarados can deal hefty damage by discarding cards from the deck.

In addition to learning new game mechanics, the Build & Battle Boxes also provide a unique experience for seasoned players, allowing them to flex their creative deck-building skills. Close to over 240 new cards will be available in this expansion.
