Spain Orders Airbnb To Withdraw Nearly 66,000 Listings

MADRID, Spain — Spain’s Consumer Rights Ministry announced on Monday it has ordered the removal of nearly 66,000 Airbnb listings from its platform due to various rule violations.
The ministry stated that many of the 65,935 listings lacked essential details, including the required license number. Additionally, it was noted that some listings did not clarify whether their owners were individuals or companies.
Authorities found discrepancies in some of the license numbers provided, prompting the crackdown. This move comes amid growing concerns over the impact of short-term rental platforms on local housing markets and tourism.
Spain has been facing an ongoing debate regarding mass tourism and its consequences on the communities. Recently, protests occurred in cities like Barcelona against large events, which residents believe contribute to overcrowding and a decline in local quality of life.
The ministry affirmed its commitment to enforcing regulations and ensuring that rental platforms adhere to guidelines designed to protect local consumers and maintain fair housing practices.
