BEAVERTON, OregonPortland Timbers‘ newcomer David Da Costa faced a challenging environment during his first English interview after training last Tuesday. The 24-year-old from Portugal was welcomed as the team’s designated player, stepping in for Evander who left the club earlier this year.

Da Costa has impressed this season with two goals and four assists, helping the Timbers lead their previous year’s performance by 10 points after just 13 games. “His work rate is unreal,” assistant coach Dave van den Bergh said. “We knew he liked to press, but his work rate off the ball is unbelievable.”

Despite his soft-spoken demeanor, Da Costa is realistic about his role. He signed a four-year contract for $6 million and is determined to make his mark in the club. On speaking English, he stated, “I understand a little English,” although he often used a Spanish translator initially. Recently, he opted to share his journey in English, marking a big step in his adaptation.

Da Costa’s path from Almada, Portugal, to Portland includes a childhood spent playing competitive soccer in France. He recalled moving to France at age nine with the hope of pursuing a soccer career. “I said to my mom, ‘Let’s move to France’,” he said. His talent was recognized early, winning championships with RC Lens, where he signed his first professional contract in 2019.

During his time in Lens, he dealt with ups and downs, including injuries that limited his appearances. Nevertheless, he was able to demonstrate his skills in the MLS, making a notable debut in a season-opener against Vancouver, which he called a special moment.

Da Costa’s first goal for Portland came from a free-kick late in his third match, helping secure a victory and earning him cheers from the Timbers’ fans. “That was a big win for us,” he remarked. “I think it’s a new story, new players, and I’m trying to do my job to help the team achieve its objectives.”

With a clear focus on the team’s success, Da Costa expressed that he does not feel pressure despite being compared to his predecessor. “I don’t feel pressure,” he shared, demonstrating confidence in his role. In wrapping up, he simply stated, “I’m funny,” leaving a lasting impression of his personality.
