Sindh Plans to Vaccinate Over 10.6 Million Children Against Polio in May Campaign

KARACHI, Pakistan — Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah announced a major campaign to vaccinate over 10.6 million children against polio this May. During a recent meeting of the Provincial Polio Task Force, he emphasized the critical need for accountability to ensure no child is left unvaccinated, stating, “every missed child is a potential case.”
Minister for Health Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho and EOC In-charge Irshad Sodhar provided detailed briefings on the anti-polio drive set to begin on May 26 and end on June 1. The officials reported that ten wild polio cases have emerged in Pakistan this year, including four in Sindh, highlighting the ongoing threat.
The campaign aims to cover all 30 districts of Sindh, engaging more than 80,000 trained frontline workers and 25,539 law enforcement personnel, including female constables. Shah stressed the need for a concerted effort to combat polio, saying, “We must ensure that no child in Sindh remains unprotected.”
To address persistent vaccine refusals in high-risk areas like Karachi, 157 doctors will engage directly with 6,780 families that have previously declined the vaccine. Shah directed the activation of Refusal Conversion Committees in areas with low vaccination rates to improve coverage.
The health initiative is more than just vaccination; it also includes administering vitamin A supplements to children aged six months to under five years. This step is crucial as it builds immunity during the high-transmission season.
Shah’s remarks echoed the importance of community involvement, urging parents, religious leaders, and educators to foster trust and cooperation in the vaccination process. The campaign is part of a larger effort to eradicate polio and ensure equitable health access in Sindh.
Following the press briefing, Shah discussed new healthcare facilities being developed in the province, aimed at expanding cardiac care services. His administration aims to enhance public health and protect lives with dignity and compassion.
