Jonathan Groff Performing In Just In Time Musical

NEW YORK, NY

Jonathan Groff is making waves on Broadway as he portrays the legendary singer Bobby Darin in the new jukebox musical, Just in Time. This marks Groff’s return to the stage shortly after his stint in Merrily We Roll Along, and he expressed his excitement in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Groff has been developing the Bobby Darin project for eight years, which he describes as a unique experience. “I’ve never before been involved in a project from the conception,” he said. “To be nominated for this and for the show itself, to get six nominations after working on it for eight years, is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.”

The show opens with Groff introducing himself, a choice that he pushed for to establish a connection with the audience. “I wanted to start the show as myself… to celebrate what Bobby did to a room when he was in it,” he explained.

Groff prepares intensively for the demanding role, which includes significant dancing and singing. He shared insights into his preparation, stating, “It’s like training for a marathon physically, this role, and I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been in my whole life.”

Throughout the performance, Groff maintains an engaging presence with the audience, humorously warning them that they may get wet from his performance. He acknowledged that this quirk has become part of his stage persona, stemming from past performances.

Interacting with the audience has profoundly impacted Groff, especially his memorable exchange with a young girl who lit up when he invited her to dance. “It was so cute,” he recounted.

Groff’s deep admiration for Darin not only influences his performance but also connects with his own passion for performing. “Doing this was when [Darin] felt the most alive… honestly, same,” Groff said, highlighting the shared joy of captivating an audience.

This year, Groff is also nominated for a Tony Award alongside his former Glee co-star Darren Criss. He acknowledges the significance of their mutual nominations as a testament to their shared journey in the theater world.

As Just in Time continues its run at the Circle in the Square Theatre, Groff remains grateful for the opportunity to honor a music legend while experiencing the joy of live performance.
