Memorial Day Commemorations In America

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Americans will observe Memorial Day on Monday, May 26, 2025. This holiday honors those who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces during battles. The day is also a significant aspect of America’s “civil religion,” as noted by scholar Robert N. Bellah.

In his 1967 article, Bellah described Memorial Day observances as major events for communities, emphasizing a dedication to the fallen and the spirit of sacrifice. Traditionally, Memorial Day is seen as the unofficial start of summer.

The holiday originated as Decoration Day, established by the Grand Army of the Republic on May 30, 1868, to honor Union soldiers who died in the Civil War. Major General John A. Logan, the organization’s leader, called for decorating the graves of those who sacrificed their lives in defense of the nation.

Some accounts date back to October 1864, when people in Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, began decorating graves. A significant tribute occurred on May 1, 1865, when Black freedmen and their White allies honored fallen Union soldiers in Charleston, South Carolina.

While both Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day recognize military service, they differ in focus. Memorial Day specifically honors those who died in uniform, while Veteran’s Day celebrates all who have served, particularly living veterans.

Memorial Day is one of three holidays dedicated to military personnel, following Armed Forces Day. As the observance approaches, families across the nation will share memories and honor their loved ones who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
