Astros Rally in Seventh for 5-3 Win Over Athletics

HOUSTON, Texas — The Houston Astros overcame a late deficit to defeat the Oakland Athletics 5-3 on Wednesday night at Daikin Park. The victory was propelled by a two-run seventh inning sparked by a home run from rookie Nick Dezenzo.
With the Astros trailing by one run, Dezenzo smashed his second home run of the season into center field, tying the game at 3-3. Dezenzo sent the ball 416 feet on the fourth pitch he faced from rookie pitcher Ryan Sterner, who had just taken over for starter Luis Severino.
Later in the inning, a two-out single from Victor Caratini brought home both runners on second and third, securing a critical lead for the Astros. Houston’s offense was able to capitalize on the momentum generated by Dezenzo’s blast.
Astros starter Lance McCullers allowed five hits and three runs during his six innings, returning to form after a lengthy injury absence. McCullers struck out 12 batters in the game, tying his career high set in 2018.
Reliever Ryne Stanek (2-0) earned the win after striking out two in a scoreless seventh inning. Closer Ryan Pressly converted his 14th save of the season, finishing the game without allowing a run in the ninth.
On the opposing side, Wilson homered with two RBIs for the Athletics, who have struggled recently with a record of 3-17 over their last 20 games. Severino, despite the loss, had a strong outing, yielding only three hits and two earned runs in six innings while striking out four.
Injury news for Houston: First baseman Kyle Tucker was hit on the hand by a pitch early in the game but was cleared of any serious injury after negative X-rays. Manager Joe Espada confirmed Tucker’s injury was near his knuckles.
The Astros will open a series against the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday night, while the Athletics prepare for a matchup against the Toronto Blue Jays.
