Cowser Returns, Orioles Defeat Mariners 5-1 in Seattle

SEATTLE, Washington — Colton Cowser made a triumphant return to the field on June 4, 2025, hitting a home run as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Seattle Mariners 5-1 at T-Mobile Park. This marked Cowser’s first game since March 30, when he suffered a broken left thumb.
Cowser’s home run came during the fifth inning, shortly after Mariners starter George Kirby struggled against the Orioles. Kirby gave up two runs, starting with a sacrifice fly by Ramón Urías in the first inning and another RBI single by Ryan O’Hearn in the fifth.
The Orioles dominated throughout the game, adding two more runs in the ninth inning. Baltimore’s right-hander, Tomoyuki Sugano, delivered an impressive performance, allowing just one run over seven innings. The lone run for the Mariners came from a solo home run by Rowdy Tellez.
A key moment in the game occurred when Kirby was struck in the face by a line drive off the bat of Urías in the fifth inning. Kirby immediately left the game, trailing Baltimore and leaving fans worried about his condition. “Didn’t even hurt, honestly,” Kirby said. “I’m just glad it kind of missed bad spots on my face.”
Despite Cowser’s success, the Mariners faced a tough loss, marking their 27th defeat of the season. Cowser has now reached base safely in all seven career games against Seattle, with a batting average of .400 against them.
The Mariners are set to face the Orioles again on June 5, with beginning pitcher Emerson Hancock (2-2, 5.64 ERA) taking the mound for Seattle, while Cade Povich (1-4, 5.29 ERA) is slated to start for Baltimore.
