Phoenix Mercury Defy Expectations with Strong Start in 2025 Season

PHOENIX – The Phoenix Mercury are exceeding expectations early in the 2025 WNBA season. Seven games in, the team boasts a 5–2 record, the best start since their championship year in 2014.

This strong performance comes despite the absence of key players Alyssa Thomas, Kahleah Copper, and Natasha Mack, all of whom are currently injured. With only two returning players from last season, coach Nate Tibbetts has had to adapt quickly to significant roster changes.
n
The Mercury are making a notable shift to an aggressive, three-point shooting style, averaging 30 attempts per game. This is the highest average for any team in WNBA history across an entire season. New addition Satou Sabally has played a crucial role, averaging 21.3 points per game.

“I would truly say that this is the first time I’ve been coached to my limits,” Sabally said. “I’m grateful that I’m being put in those positions.” Sabally, who joined the Mercury after five seasons with the Dallas Wings, expressed excitement over the team’s focus on movement and skill.

Despite facing challenges, the Mercury’s remaining roster has demonstrated impressive adaptability. Tibbetts has actively engaged younger players, many of whom have prior professional experience overseas.
n
“Some of it our hand has been forced a little bit with Mack and Kah out,” Tibbetts admitted, referring to the injuries reshaping their approach. “The hope is that this is going to help us down the road.”

Alyssa Thomas, another key player, commented on the importance of surrounding her with shooters. “Before coming here, (Phoenix’s front office) told me they were going out there to find shooters, and they definitely delivered on that,” she said.
n
The Mercury’s defensive play has also improved, ranking second in the league for fewest points allowed per possession. Sabally emphasized teamwork in their defensive strategy: “We limit them to one shot and then get that rebound. That’s how you win on defensive plays.”

The team will face a significant test with three games scheduled over five days, starting with an away game against the Minnesota Lynx, the reigning Western Conference champions. For now, the Mercury look poised to make a mark in the league.
