DETROIT — Jahmai Jones made an immediate impact in his return to the big leagues on Friday, hitting a home run in his first at-bat for the Detroit Tigers against the Chicago Cubs.

Jones, who was called up from Triple-A Toledo earlier that day, capped off a whirlwind journey from Columbus, Ohio, to Comerica Park. He stepped to the plate in the eighth inning during a tight game, clutching a 2-1 lead for the Tigers.

The 27-year-old outfielder launched a first-pitch curveball from left-handed reliever Génesis Cabrera 374 feet to left field, marking only the second homer of his major league career.

“The biggest thing was just being ready for the moment,” Jones told reporters after the game. “I wanted to go up there, search for something I wanted to hit and thankfully it was the first pitch.”

Jones was initially on a road trip in Columbus when he got the call to join the Tigers. His excitement was palpable as he rushed to the ballpark, arriving just in time to prepare for the game.

“Detroit means a lot to him,” said Tigers manager A.J. Hinch. “All you want to do is make a really good impression. We knew him from the spring, but this is the big leagues.”

Born into a football legacy with his father Andre Jones, a former Lions linebacker, and brother T.J. Jones, a former wide receiver, Jahmai embraces the opportunity to contribute to the Tigers’ success, especially after a lengthy stint in the minors.

Manager Hinch praised his versatility, noting that Jones can play both outfield and infield. “He can be electrifying because of the good decisions at the plate and the athlete he is,” Hinch said.

As the Tigers prepare for a challenging series against the Cubs, they hold a strong position with a 41-23 record, currently the best in baseball. Jones’ debut offers a glimmer of hope for a team looking to build on its momentum.

“I bought in right then and there,” Jones said about his transition back to the majors. “I’m loving every bit of it.”
