Richmond, California – A magnitude 3.4 earthquake struck in the North Pacific Ocean, approximately 5.9 miles north of Richmond on Sunday, June 8, 2025, at 9:30 PM local time. The quake had a shallow depth of 9.4 kilometers (5.8 miles) and was felt across the surrounding region.

According to reports, the seismic event caused weak shaking and was confirmed within minutes by monitoring agencies. The first report was received just two minutes after the quake, indicating that many people in the area experienced the tremor. A total of 262 out of 264 reports confirmed feeling the earthquake.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) noted that grounds shook intensely from Vallejo, which saw 44 reports, as well as from Berkeley and Richmond. In Vallejo, residents reported a strong and fast shake, while many in Richmond described a slight rattle with no damage observed.

Local weather conditions during the quake included broken clouds and a temperature of 13.3°C (56°F), suggesting that weather played no role in the experience of the quake. Seismic energy released was estimated at 7.9 x 109 joules, equivalent to 1.9 tons of TNT.

Residents expressed a variety of reactions to the event, with many taking to social media to share their experiences. One user described feeling a quick jolt, which startled their pets, while another noted hearing their windows rattle.
