Colts QB Anthony Richardson Sidelined by Shoulder Injury

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson is sidelined indefinitely due to a shoulder injury, coach Shane Steichen announced on Thursday. Richardson aggravated his throwing shoulder, which he previously injured in October 2023 during his rookie season.
The injury occurred during last week’s organized team activities, where Richardson reported soreness in his right shoulder. He has not practiced since and will miss next week’s mandatory three-day minicamp. Steichen did not provide a timeline for Richardson’s return, including his availability for training camp, which begins July 22.
“Doctors and trainers checked it out. He’s got some aggravation in his AC joint,” Steichen said. “We’re gonna sit him out this week. Obviously, he’ll sit out for minicamp. We’ll ease him into throwing when he does come back.”
Despite the setback, Steichen expressed relief that Richardson will not require surgery at this time. The injury’s timing adds to a tough history for the young quarterback, who has struggled with various injuries since joining the league.
Richardson has missed a total of 17 games in his first two seasons, including 12 games last year due to the initial AC joint sprain. Last season, he also dealt with back spasms, an oblique injury, and a concussion, which led to a temporary benching in favor of veteran Joe Flacco.
The Colts aimed to bolster their quarterback position by signing former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones to a one-year, $14 million contract. Jones will take the majority of first-team reps during Richardson’s absence, giving him a chance to establish himself in the starting role.
“It’s frustrating, but he is in good spirits,” Steichen said regarding Richardson. “We’re working through it right now.”
