New York, NY — Sydney Sweeney, known for her roles in Euphoria and The White Lotus, recently shared details about her transformation for the upcoming biopic on boxer Christy Martin. In a cover story for W Magazine, Sweeney revealed the intense training regimen she followed to prepare for the role.

“I came onboard to play Christy, and I had about three and a half months of training,” said Sweeney, who gained over 30 pounds for the role. “I started eating. I weight-trained in the morning for an hour, kickboxed midday for about two hours, and then weight-trained again at night for an hour.”

Christy Martin, who rose to fame in the 1990s, is known as “The Coal Miner’s Daughter.” She became a world champion in the super welterweight division and gained notoriety for surviving a murder attempt by her husband, James Martin, in 2010. This aspect of her life will also be explored in the biopic directed by David Michôd.

“My body was completely different,” Sweeney explained. “I didn’t fit in any of my clothes. I’m usually a size 23 in jeans, and I was wearing a size 27. My boobs got bigger. And my butt got huge. It was crazy!”

Despite the physical challenges, Sweeney embraced the transformation. “But it was amazing: I was so strong, like crazy strong,” she said. The actress shared that during production, she received encouragement from Martin herself, who expressed excitement about Sweeney playing her.

“I think she is young, hot, talented,” Martin said about Sweeney. “I want this movie to bring awareness to domestic violence and the overall underdog story.”

Sweeney’s commitment to the role is evident. After filming Martin’s story, she has just seven weeks to lose the weight she gained before starting work on Euphoria Season 3.

As Sweeney anticipates the film’s release, she reflects on the importance of telling Martin’s story. “Her journey is a testament to resilience, strength, and hope,” Sweeney shared. The biopic is expected to present a powerful narrative about both Martin’s boxing career and her survival against domestic violence.
