CHICAGO, Ill. — As the WNBA season approaches the month mark, the New York Liberty and Minnesota Lynx have maintained unbeaten records, while the Chicago Sky face challenges after losing their star point guard.

The Liberty, at 8-0, recently secured a win against the Washington Mystics despite an ankle injury to Jonquel Jones. The team’s depth is expected to help them navigate Jones’s absence, as they prepare to face the Sky and Indiana Fever this week.

Meanwhile, the Lynx, standing at 9-0, have been powered by standout performances from Napheesa Collier, who averages 25.5 points per game. The Lynx will test their undefeated streak against the Seattle Storm and the Las Vegas Aces in their upcoming matches.

The Sky, however, are grappling with a significant setback. Star point guard Courtney Vandersloot suffered a season-ending ACL injury during the first quarter of their recent game against the Fever. Coach Tyler Marsh expressed concern over the loss of Vandersloot, stating, “She’s our engine, she’s our captain and our leader out there.” The team currently sits at 2-5 for the season.

Despite Vandersloot’s absence, the Sky must quickly adapt to their new reality to have any hope of competing for a playoff spot. Their initial plans to have a successful season are now in jeopardy, with their weak defense allowing 90.1 points per game, the worst in the league.

The Fever, on the other hand, have begun to find their footing and recorded two consecutive wins despite the absence of injured star Caitlin Clark. They will look to continue their momentum against the Dream this Tuesday.

As the Commissioner’s Cup games progress, teams are striving to find consistency, with the Lynx and Liberty leading the pack. For the Sky, improving their performance will be critical if they wish to remain competitive in the league.
