Detroit Tigers Pitching 2025

DETROIT, Mich. — The Detroit Tigers enter this weekend with the best record in Major League Baseball, attributed in large part to their impressive starting pitching.

During April, the Tigers’ starting rotation boasted a collective ERA of 2.80, the best for the franchise since their 1984 World Series team. However, as May rolled in, inconsistency and injuries began to emerge.

Casey Mize, one of the early favorites for the American League Comeback Player of the Year, has faced challenges. Initially, he showcased his talent with a 2.12 ERA and a 4-1 record, but a hamstring injury set him back. In his last three starts since returning, Mize has recorded a 4.15 ERA and a worrying 1.92 WHIP.

His walk rate has increased considerably; he walked as many batters in his last three outings as he did throughout April. During his recent performance against the Chicago White Sox, Mize threw 93 pitches but managed only 59 strikes before being pulled after 4.2 innings.

“If the hurler can get it back together, it raises the ceiling of the starting rotation immensely,” said a coach, emphasizing the importance of Mize’s performance moving forward.

Meanwhile, the Tigers have seen noticeable improvements from players like Javier Baez, who has transformed his game after dealing with injuries. Baez is currently hitting .275 with six home runs and 30 RBIs, a significant turnaround after past struggles.

With the MLB Draft approaching, the Tigers are looking to build on their young talent. They hold the 24th overall pick and are projected to select outfielder Slater de Brun from Summit High School in Oregon, who is deemed to have a high baseball IQ and significant defensive potential.

As they face the Chicago Cubs this weekend, the Tigers continue to seek consistency and aim to solidify their position as a contending team.
