Sam Burns Holds Lead as U.S. Open Final Round Approaches

OAKMONT, Pa. — Sam Burns held steady during the third round of the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club, finishing with a 1-under 69 to take a one-shot lead into Sunday. Burns ended the day at 4-under overall, inspired by his close friend, Scottie Scheffler, who has won three major titles.
Burns, who is looking for his first major championship victory, made key plays on the challenging course, including a tap-in birdie after a beautiful pitch shot and crucial par saves on the 18th hole. “When I got out of position, I feel like I did a good job of getting myself back in the fairway,” Burns said. “That was key to the round today.”
J.J. Spaun kept pace with Burns throughout the round, shooting a 69 and finishing at 3-under. Despite a bogey on the 18th hole, Spaun expressed satisfaction with his performance, knowing he’s still in contention. “I’m just happy I’m still within shouting distance going into tomorrow,” he said.
Australian golfer Adam Scott is tied for second with Spaun, also at 3-under. Playing with experience, Scott has not won a major title since the 2013 Masters. His consistent play has positioned him well for a final push. “If I were to come away with it tomorrow, it would be a hell of a round of golf and an exclamation point on my career,” Scott said.
Viktor Hovland, the only other player under par at 1-under, showed resilience after a rocky start. Even with early bogeys, he salvaged his round and landed three birdies. “I’m well aware that I’ve got a chance tomorrow,” Hovland noted.
The U.S. Open, known for its challenging layout, proved to be damp but manageable on Saturday, as the players faced softer greens and minimal weather interruptions. Burns will head into the final round with the hope of securing his first major title, while competitors like Scott and Spaun aim to topple him.
The final round promises to be a thrilling finish, a test of skill and endurance for these four talented golfers vying for victory.
