Danny Boyle Returns to Horror with ’28 Years Later’ This June

London, England – Director Danny Boyle is back with a new sequel to his 2002 cult classic, ‘28 Days Later.’ ‘28 Years Later‘ will hit theaters on June 20, expanding the apocalyptic horror tale that first captivated audiences nearly a quarter-century ago.
This film revisits the world ravaged by the Rage Virus, starting a new chapter that follows 12-year-old Spike, played by Alfie Williams. His journey takes him from a secluded island community to the mainland, where he and his father, Jamie (portrayed by Aaron Taylor-Johnson), encounter terrifying new mutations of the virus and the chilling truths about survival.
Boyle, known for his groundbreaking work in the genre, aims to explore themes reflecting on the world post-pandemic. He noted that the narrative is “based in the U.K.,” steering away from the idea of an international contagion. Instead, it focuses on how British characters navigate and respond to their apocalyptic landscape.
“We wanted to look at our own land rather than have the virus spread globally, allowing the characters to resolve their crises without external interventions,” Boyle stated, sharing how his creative choices were also influenced by recent events like Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic.
The film will also feature Ralph Fiennes in a key role as Dr. Kelson, a mysterious survivor Spike meets during his travels. Contrary to previous installments, ’28 Years Later’ aims to deliver a more localized and intimate story about survival and the impact of isolation.
Boyle reflected on his original film and stated, “It was the first film to illustrate citywide terror, showcasing how quickly urban life can be altered.” This latest installment aims to explore similar themes, yet adapt to modern challenges.
Audiences have shown immense interest, with the trailer for ’28 Years Later’ earning significant views on its release, indicating that the franchise’s allure is far from fading. Pre-sales for the film have also shown promising figures, suggesting a franchise-best opening at the box office.
Following ’28 Years Later,’ Boyle plans a trilogy. The second film, titled ’28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,’ will be directed by Nia DaCosta and is set for release in January 2026. Boyle is expected to return for the trilogy’s conclusion, which he teased may focus on themes of redemption and closure.
As excitement builds for the return to this gripping universe, Boyle expressed, “I hope audiences enjoy this film, whatever category they place it in.” His upcoming work is sure to engage fans and new viewers alike as they return to the haunting world shaped by ’28 Days Later.’
