Oilers Negotiating Eight-Year Deal for Forward Trent Frederic

Edmonton, Alberta – The Edmonton Oilers are reportedly in discussions for an eight-year contract extension with forward Trent Frederic, a pending unrestricted free agent (UFA). The talks, which were put on hold during the Stanley Cup Final, are expected to resume this week following the team’s recent loss, according to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period.
The Oilers see value in Frederic, despite a challenging season plagued by injuries and limited playtime. He participated in only one regular-season game with Edmonton after being acquired through a three-team trade from the Boston Bruins. During his time in the playoffs, he played all 22 games, scoring one goal and adding three assists.
Frederic’s production was not as strong as some might expect given recent trends of long-term deals for players in similar roles. In fact, his scoring line of 8-7-15 and a -16 rating represent a career low. However, the Oilers maintain that his prior performance, including a high of 40 points during a season with the Bruins, strengthens their case for a long-term commitment.
Fans and analysts are divided on the wisdom of a max-term deal for Frederic. Some observers argue that a commitment through his age-35 season may not serve the team’s best interests, especially when considering the team’s tight salary cap situation. Other teams have made similar long-term investments in bottom-six forwards, but Frederic’s injury history and production this past season raise concerns.
Ryan Rishaug of TSN noted that the Oilers view Frederic as a player worth betting on, suggesting his potential to develop further. “I believe the Oilers are prepared to place a bet on Trent Frederic,” said Rishaug, emphasizing that Frederic’s size and physical play fit the Oilers’ needs.
If finalized, this deal could signal a change in the lineup, as moving on from higher-priced veterans might be necessary to manage salary caps. Frederic’s extension will impact decision-making as the Oilers prepare for the next season, especially with an eye on maintaining a competitive roster.
As negotiations advance, it remains to be seen how Frederic’s potential contract will affect the future of other players within the organization.
