MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A Flash Flood Warning is in effect for Memphis and the Mid-South due to continuous heavy rainfall on Thursday morning. According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, the warning will remain until 9:15 a.m. for Memphis, Bartlett, and Collierville, while Covington, Mason, and Stanton are under warning until 8:15 a.m.
The storm system is causing rain and thunderstorms to appear on radar through mid-morning, raising concerns about gusty winds, hail, and flash flooding. At 6:48 a.m., reports indicated that between 2 and 3 inches of rain had already fallen in the area.
Residents are advised to prepare with rain gear as temperatures are expected to rise to the upper 80s and feel like 100 degrees this afternoon. The chance of rain remains high this morning with only a 20% chance in the afternoon, with winds expected to be around 10 mph.
Looking ahead, the forecast predicts hot and humid conditions with a low chance of rain for the next several days. A Heat Advisory may be issued this weekend due to anticipated heat indices exceeding 100 degrees, prompting residents to practice heat safety.
Flash flooding has already begun, impacting urban areas, highways, and smaller streams. Locations likely to experience flooding include Bartlett, Germantown, and Memphis, among others. Affected residents are advised to turn around and avoid flooded roads, as many flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.
