Jasmine Paolini Upsets Iga Swiatek in Wuhan Quarterfinals

WUHAN, China — Jasmine Paolini shocked No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek with a decisive 6-1, 6-2 victory in the quarterfinals of the Dongfeng Voyah Wuhan Open on Friday night. This win not only marked Paolini’s first victory over Swiatek after six consecutive losses but also advanced her to the semifinals, boosting her chances for a coveted spot in the WTA Finals.
In just 65 minutes at the Optics Valley International Tennis Centre, the 29-year-old Italian took charge early, breaking Swiatek’s serve multiple times. After racing to a 4-0 lead, Paolini closed the first set with another break, capitalizing on a misstep from Swiatek.
Paolini displayed remarkable precision, finishing the match with 15 winners and only three unforced errors. “Finally I won a match,” she said during her on-court interview. “I’m super happy about my level. Just feels amazing.”
In the semifinal, Paolini will face Coco Gauff, who defeated Laura Siegemund 6-3, 6-0 earlier in the day. Paolini has faced Gauff multiple times this season, winning the last three matchups after initially losing the first two encounters.
By ousting Swiatek, Paolini improved her standing for a spot at the PIF WTA Finals in Riyadh, especially after Elena Rybakina was eliminated earlier in the tournament. This win marks Paolini’s 41st WTA Tour victory in 2025, demonstrating her consistent performance this year.
As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on the semifinal matches, as both Paolini and Gauff are eager to solidify their positions and pursue greater achievements in their careers.
