CHENNAI, India — West Indies cricketer, Shai Hope, and teammate John Campbell recently showcased their skills against India’s bowling attack while teammate Keacy Carty trained in Chennai for an upcoming ODI series against Bangladesh.

Carty, who was omitted from the Test side for this tour, has established himself as a key player for the West Indies ODI team. At 28, he has solidified his position at No. 3 in the batting lineup, accumulating 1,110 runs with an average of 52.85 since his debut in May 2022.

“Before I got the opportunity to bat at No. 3, [coach Daren] Sammy informed me about the expectations for that position,” Carty recalled during a training session. “He showed me the stats from top players worldwide and pointed out areas where I could improve.”

Carty emphasized the importance of adapting his play, especially as he practiced his scoop shot, a technique he believes will be valuable against spin bowlers. “The purpose of coming here is to improve my ability against spin and refine my shot selection,” he said.

His awareness of conditions shone through during his first ODI century against England, where he strategically paced his innings against varying bowling styles. “I focus on keeping their main threats out of the game,” Carty explained, noting that being cautious against star bowlers like Jofra Archer and Adil Rashid paid off.

Carty, who plays domestically for Trinidad and Tobago, attributes his growth to mentorship from seasoned players such as Nicholas Pooran and Kieron Pollard. “Their insights and rigorous training expectations motivate me to excel,” he said, acknowledging Pollard’s unwavering support through feedback and analysis of his performances.

As the West Indies prepare for their encounter with Bangladesh, Carty’s experience and adaptability will be crucial. “I am focused on taking things series by series and contributing positively to the team,” Carty said as he looks towards a possible World Cup appearance in 2027.
