Colin Bird Canada Michigan Trade Tariffs

DETROIT, Michigan — Canadian Consul General Colin Bird emphasized the significance of the more than $60 billion in annual two-way trade between Canada and Michigan during his appearance on Michigan Matters. Bird, who has served in his role for three years, noted that he oversees trade relations for three other U.S. states as well, with his office located in Detroit’s Renaissance Center.

In the interview, Bird also spoke about the recent visit of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to the White House, where he met President Donald Trump. Bird stressed that both leaders have backgrounds in business and real estate, indicating potential synergies between their administrations.

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens and Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan Barnett joined Bird on the show. The mayors discussed the impact of tariffs on local businesses, voicing concerns over the economic uncertainty the tariffs have created. Barnett, a former president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, mentioned he has been in contact with other city leaders across the nation, including those in Phoenix, who share similar concerns regarding the tariffs.

All three guests addressed the anticipated opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, set to launch in early 2026. They expressed optimism about the bridge’s potential to enhance cross-border trade and travel.

Additionally, Governor Gretchen Whitmer recently announced that Amtrak is considering renewing passenger train service from the Michigan Central Station to Windsor and onward to Toronto. This news could further facilitate easier travel and commerce between the two regions.

Fans of the show can catch Michigan Matters at its new time: 5:30 a.m. Sundays on CBS Detroit and 9:30 a.m. Sundays on CW Detroit 50 WKBD.
