Mediterranean Diet Found Effective for Easing IBS Symptoms
Sheffield, England — A recent study suggests that following a Mediterranean diet may significantly help alleviate symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Researchers found that the diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and healthy fats, could be a more effective treatment option than traditional dietary guidelines.
IBS affects many individuals, causing discomfort such as stomach cramps, bloating, and diarrhea. It is often a lifelong condition managed through dietary changes and medical treatments. Current guidance typically recommends avoiding certain foods and increasing fruit and vegetable intake.
The study was conducted by researchers at the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. It involved 139 participants living with IBS; 68 adhered to the Mediterranean diet for six weeks, while 71 followed standard dietary advice. Both groups attended online educational sessions and received supplementary materials.
Dr. Imran Aziz, a senior clinical lecturer in gastroenterology at the University of Sheffield, stated, “For millions of people worldwide, IBS symptoms can severely impact daily life.” The study found that 62% of those following the Mediterranean diet reported significant symptom improvement compared to 42% in the other group.
Dr. Aziz emphasized the findings, stating, “Our study provides strong evidence that the Mediterranean diet can be a simple, enjoyable, and highly effective first step in managing this common condition.” He noted that the diet not only matched but outperformed traditional dietary advice in reducing IBS symptoms.
The Mediterranean diet may simplify dietary management for patients and healthcare providers alike. The study’s outcomes could help shape future guidelines for IBS treatment, promoting an approach that’s both healthy and sustainable for individuals affected by the condition.
