Ohio State’s Carnell Tate Shines as NFL Draft Prospect
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate has captured attention for his outstanding performance on the field this season. In a recent game against Wisconsin, Tate scored two touchdowns, including a remarkable 33-yard catch between two defenders, demonstrating his skills as he helped the top-ranked Buckeyes secure a 34-0 victory.
Ohio State coach Ryan Day praised Tate’s abilities, stating, “He is playing himself to be a first-rounder and All-American. He’s just a different style of player than Jeremiah but just as dangerous and just as good.” Tate’s performance alongside teammate Jeremiah Smith positions both players among the top receivers in college football.
The excitement doesn’t end with Tate’s individual stats. Ohio State has been a hotbed for NFL talent, with five receivers selected in the first round over the last four drafts. This year, the Big Ten has also shown a rich depth of receiving talent, as seven of the top 19 FBS players in yards receiving per game hail from the conference.
ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. highlighted Tate among the top draft-eligible receivers, ranking him third. Kiper noted that Tate, along with Southern California’s Makai Lemon, are top prospects for the 2026 NFL Draft. With 34 receptions for 587 yards and six touchdowns so far this season, Tate is proving he can compete with the best.
As discussions about the upcoming NFL Draft grow, CBS Sports recently projected Tate as a possible third overall pick heading to the Tennessee Titans. If this prediction comes true, it would mark a milestone for Ohio State, making Tate the highest drafted wide receiver in the program’s history.
Ohio State’s strong showing in college football is also due to the depth and skill of its quarterback, Julian Sayin. Sayin expressed confidence in both Tate and Smith, stating they can capitalize on 1-on-1 matchups, enhancing their chances of scoring touchdowns. “When it’s one-on-one and you’re looking both sides, I have full confidence that both these guys are going to go score a touchdown for us,” Sayin said.
As the Buckeyes continue their season, the combination of Tate and Smith elevates Ohio State’s status as a powerhouse, creating new challenges for opposing defenses that must now contend with an exceptional receiving corps.
