LONDON, England – Lynne Ramsay’s latest film, Die My Love, delves into the unsettling realities of motherhood, featuring Jennifer Lawrence in a lead role. The film, set to premiere on November 7, explores the psychological struggles faced by Grace, a new mother adapting to her life in rural America with her husband, Jackson, played by Robert Pattinson.

The narrative unfolds as Grace battles postpartum depression and feelings of isolation, paralleling themes present in Ramsay’s previous works. Ramsay, known for her unflinching portrayals of family dynamics, felt compelled to adapt this story after receiving a copy of the book from Martin Scorsese. She said, “Jennifer was very keen and Justine said I should just give it a shot,” referring to Lawrence and her producing partner.

Lawrence, who revealed she faced her own postpartum anxiety following the birth of her second child, connected deeply with the character’s struggles. “I think that just added another layer,” she shared in an interview. Though she emphasized that one doesn’t need to be a parent to portray one, her experiences provided additional insight into Grace’s character.

From an initial relationship filled with joy and freedom in their new home, the dynamics shift dramatically once the child arrives. This change sets the stage for an exploration of motherhood that is raw and, at times, humorous. Ramsay’s direction strikes a balance between reality and surrealism, enhancing the film’s depth.

As the film develops, college friend and acclaimed actress Sissy Spacek portrays Jackson’s mother, adding an additional layer to the family’s narrative. Ramsay noted, “There’s a satellite love story at the heart of the film,” indicating that beneath the chaos, there exists an undercurrent of connection between the characters.

In preparation for their roles, Ramsay organized interpretative dance lessons for Lawrence and Pattinson. “It was totally humiliating,” Lawrence recalled, especially when they were asked to perform nude on the first day of filming. However, this risk created an open environment that helped the actors find their chemistry.

Through the lens of Ramsay’s distinct storytelling style, Die My Love promises to resonate with audiences, confronting the darker truths of motherhood while weaving moments of dark humor and vulnerability.
