Corey O’Connor Wins Election as Pittsburgh’s Next Mayor
Pittsburgh, PA — Democrat Corey O'Connor has been elected as the 62nd mayor of Pittsburgh, easily defeating Republican Tony Moreno in the general election held on Tuesday. The Associated Press called the race shortly after polling closed at 8 p.m., noting O’Connor’s commanding lead, particularly in mail-in ballots.
O’Connor, who is currently the Allegheny County Controller, beat incumbent Mayor Ed Gainey in the Democratic primary earlier this year. During his election night celebration at the IBEW Local #5 hall, O’Connor thanked his supporters, expressing humility and honor at the opportunity to serve. “Thank you, Pittsburgh. I am humbled and honored by the great honor and privilege of serving as your next mayor,” he said.
The win comes with significant historical weight, as O’Connor is following in the footsteps of his father, Bob O'Connor, who held the mayoral office for less than a year before his untimely death in 2006. This connection to the city’s political history adds personal significance to his victory.
O’Connor’s campaign focused on economic and fiscal issues, a shift from Gainey’s progressive approach. His election reflects a more traditional political climate for Pittsburgh, as he aims to address ongoing challenges including the city’s financial status, which has been strained by decreases in property tax revenue.
Looking ahead, O’Connor faces a range of issues from public safety to housing affordability, which are pivotal to his campaign promises. He has already indicated that selecting a new full-time police chief will be a priority in his first year, addressing a position that has seen instability in the past.
The mayor-elect, born in 1984, brings a generational shift to the city’s governance as Pittsburgh’s first millennial mayor. His past experiences on City Council will inform his efforts to guide Pittsburgh towards recovery and growth following the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and recent economic shifts.
As he prepares to take office, O’Connor has expressed determination to start early on public safety initiatives and economic development strategies, signaling a proactive approach to leadership as Pittsburgh looks towards its future.
