Graham Gano Injured Kicker New York Giants

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Graham Gano, the New York Giants kicker, is dealing with a herniated disc that may keep him off the field, but he’s also facing an unpleasant reality off the field: harassment from frustrated fans.

Gano disclosed Thursday that he’s received threats and negative messages over his performance, especially after missing a crucial field goal in last Sunday’s loss. “I hear everyone else’s frustration — media, fans,” said Gano. “Shoot, ever since sports betting started happening, I get messages telling me to kill myself every week.”

Gano stated, “I’ll hit a kick that loses them money. I’ll miss a kick and it loses them money. Someone recently wished cancer on me to die.” Although he’s tried to dismiss these messages, he admits that the emotional toll is significant, especially after being in the league for so long.

The 38-year-old kicker acknowledged the impact of continuous injuries on his mental health. Gano has struggled with various ailments, missing games in three consecutive seasons. He was placed on injured reserve earlier this season due to a groin injury and, this past week, developed discomfort he initially thought was minor.

This latest injury was worsened while lifting weights on Monday, leading to his exclusion from practice Wednesday through Friday. Gano confirmed he will not participate in the upcoming game, with veteran kicker replacing him.

Coach Brian Daboll emphasized the importance of mental health among the organization, addressing its impact on players. “We always address mental health, how important it is,” Daboll said. “You never know what anybody’s going through, so it’s a real issue that needs attention.”

Gano’s revelations highlight a complex interplay between athlete performance, fan expectations, and the increasing pressure from social media interactions.
