Apple Launches Digital ID for U.S. Passport Holders
Cupertino, CA — Apple announced the launch of Digital ID, a new feature for Apple Wallet that allows users to create a secure identification using their U.S. passports. This feature is now available at TSA checkpoints across more than 250 U.S. airports for domestic travel.
Digital ID does not replace a physical passport and is not valid for international travel. Apple aims to provide users with an additional, convenient option to present their identities without needing a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state ID.
“With the launch of Digital ID, we’re excited to expand the ways users can store and present their identity — all with the security and privacy built into iPhone and Apple Watch,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet.
The setup process begins by tapping the “Add (+)” button within the Wallet app on an iPhone. Users can select “Driver’s License or ID Cards,” followed by “Digital ID,” and then proceed with on-screen instructions. This includes scanning the photo page of the user’s passport and reading the chip embedded on the passport to verify its authenticity.
After scanning, users must take a selfie and perform specific facial movements to complete the identification process. Once verified, the Digital ID is added to the Wallet.
To present their Digital ID, users double-click the side or Home button, select Digital ID, and then hold their device near an identity reader. Users can review requested information and authenticate using Face ID or Touch ID before sharing any details.
Apple assures that the stored passport data is encrypted and cannot be accessed by the company or by third parties. The feature will eventually expand beyond TSA checkpoints to various businesses and online platforms for identity and age verification.
The introduction of Digital ID is part of Apple’s initiative to enhance user security and privacy while streamlining the process of identity verification during domestic travel.
