LOS ANGELES, California — Ruby Rose has publicly criticized Sydney Sweeney for the poor box office results of the film “Christy,” which portrays the life of trailblazing boxer Christy Martin. The biopic debuted on November 7 and earned just $1.3 million in its opening weekend, making it one of the lowest-grossing films released on over 2,000 screens.

In a post on Threads, Rose expressed her disappointment with the casting of Sweeney as Martin, stating, “The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing. I was attached to play Cherry. Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It’s part of why I stayed in acting.” Sweeney, known for her roles in “Euphoria” and “Anyone But You,” has faced scrutiny as this marks her third box office flop of 2025.

Despite the film’s lackluster performance, Sweeney shared her pride in the project on social media, saying, “We don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact.” She mentioned feeling honored to portray Martin, emphasizing that the film addresses important themes such as survival and domestic abuse awareness.

Rose did not mince words in her criticism. She stated, “None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us. You’re a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better.” Her remarks come after Sweeney referred to the film as the “most impactful project” of her life, despite its disappointing box office results.

Christy Martin, the real-life boxer and subject of the film, has publicly supported Sweeney’s portrayal of her. During a press tour, she praised Sweeney’s ability to embody the character, saying, “She got to be this totally different person that none of you expected. She kicks ass!” Martin’s background includes a tumultuous personal life, including surviving domestic abuse in her marriage to her coach.

As the backlash continues, neither Sweeney’s nor Martin’s representatives have commented on Rose’s explosive comments. The debate surrounding the film’s reception reflects larger tensions in Hollywood regarding representation and authentic storytelling.
