Buffalo Snowfall Preparations

BUFFALO, N.Y. — On Tuesday, November 11, 2025, residents across Western New York experienced the season’s first snowfall, prompting preparations for the harsh winter ahead.

The morning revealed temperatures dropping below freezing, with snowflakes falling in places like Central Park and Sussex County, New Jersey. This early snowfall is unusual, as the typical first snowfall occurs in early December.

According to Toni Yates of WABC, the snowfall is causing many homeowners to undertake winter preparations. Auto and home service businesses report an increase in customers looking to address winter needs, including snow tire installations and home winterization checks.

“With lake-effect snow and icy roads on the horizon, demand for winter services typically spikes when temperatures drop,” a local service provider remarked. They emphasized the importance of staying proactive about vehicle and home maintenance as the cold sets in.

Experts recommend homeowners to check for drafts, frozen pipes, and potential furnace problems before winter fully arrives. Taking care of these issues early can save substantial repair costs and enhance home safety during the cold months.

In the midst of winter preparations, acting Mayor Chris Scanlon announced plans to update Buffalo‘s official snow removal strategy. Following a review by the Common Council, the updated plan aims to increase transparency regarding the city’s operations during severe winter weather.

The community is encouraged to take winter preparations seriously as the first snow signals the beginning of the cold season in Buffalo.
