Beloved Anime Director Tatsuya Nagamine Passes Away at 53
(Tokyo, Japan) Tatsuya Nagamine, a renowned anime director known for his significant contributions to Toei Animation, has passed away at the age of 53. Reports indicate that he died this summer, with a memorial service held on November 13, 2025, at Toei Animation Studios in Higashi-Ōizumi, Nerima, Tokyo.
Composer Kōhei Tanaka and screenwriter Osamu Suzuki announced Nagamine’s death on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Tanaka, who attended the memorial service, described Nagamine as a key figure in the anime industry, particularly for his work on popular series such as “One Piece” and “Dragon Ball.” He expressed his desire to hear Nagamine’s voice once more, reminiscing about their engaging conversations.
Nagamine was notably known for directing the Wano Kuni and Egghead Island arcs of “One Piece.” He directed the “Dragon Ball Super: Broly” film and was involved in other significant Toei productions like “HeartCatch PreCure!” and “HappinessCharge Pretty Cure!” His contributions had a lasting impact on the anime community.
Osamu Suzuki shared a poignant memory of his first encounter with Nagamine during the production of “One Piece Film: Z” in 2010. He recalled how Nagamine initially seemed stern but later expressed gratitude for his hard work, which deeply moved Suzuki.
