Rookie Stars Shine as Spurs Record Rare Triple-Doubles
SAN ANTONIO — In a thrilling matchup on Wednesday, San Antonio Spurs‘ Victor Wembanyama and Trey Castle made history by becoming the fifth duo in NBA history to each record a 20-point triple-double in a single game. This feat was achieved during a loss against the Golden State Warriors, marking a significant milestone for both players.
With 0.2 seconds remaining, Wembanyama launched an inbounds pass that Castle converted into a bucket, bringing Wembanyama’s stat line to 31 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists. Castle also tallied 23 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists, making this a memorable performance despite the final score not going in their favor.
“I was thinking about [the double triple-double], of course,” Wembanyama said, reflecting on the play. “It was the right decision.” The game saw them become the first teammates in Spurs history to achieve such a milestone in a loss, a rare occurrence in the league.
Golden State’s dominant performance, including a game-high 46 points from guard Klay Thompson, overshadowed the Spurs’ achievement. The Warriors shot 21 three-pointers, overcoming a 16-point deficit and pulling ahead late in the third quarter.
This remarkable night also came with challenges, as Wembanyama recorded eight turnovers, just shy of his career-high. Castle, meanwhile, has been a consistent playmaker, achieving his fourth straight game with 10 assists.
“They’re doing a lot of good,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “We just have to navigate some of the peaks and valleys. There’s still a lot of highs, but we need to be more consistent.”
