Fernando Báez Sosa Netflix Docuseries

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Netflix premiered its latest docuseries, 50 segundos: el caso Fernando Báez Sosa, on November 13, 2025, revisiting the tragic death of 18-year-old Fernando Báez Sosa. He was killed in a brutal attack by a group of rugby players outside a nightclub in Villa Gesell on January 18, 2020.

The series highlights the horrific nature of the crime, framed within the broader societal impact and the judicial aftermath that followed. Fernando’s death sparked nationwide outrage and conversation around youth violence and accountability.

The docuseries features interviews with various individuals involved in the case, including the convicted killers and the victim’s family. Graciela Sosa, Fernando’s mother, emotionally recounts the last moments she shared with her son, before he embarked on what was meant to be his final vacation with friends.

“He told me he wanted to go on vacation with his friends, and that would be his last trip,” Graciela recalled. “I remember telling him, ‘Why the last?’ He explained that everyone was about to start new chapters in their lives, and although they would always remain friends, things were changing.”

The docuseries illustrates how the attack unfolded, with chilling details of the violent incident, some of which were captured on security cameras. It also details the trial that took place from January 2 to February 6, 2023, where five of the accused received life sentences for premeditated homicide, while three others were given 15 years for being secondary participants.

In the documentary, viewers witness the difficult realities faced by both the families of the victim and the convicted young men. Facundo Pedrini, director of news for Crónica TV, poignantly describes the profound impact of the crime, stating, “It was a crime that lasted 50 seconds, but it felt like a loop, as Fernando never truly stopped dying.”

Several accused in the documentary expressed their feelings about the trial, the media pressure surrounding them, and the overwhelming guilt they feel. Blas Cinalli described the sensation of being followed by numerous cameras during court sessions, while Máximo Thomsen, who delivered the fatal kick to Fernando, expressed his desire for the trial to start sooner. He shared, “I told my mom, ‘I was there. I don’t want to surprise you with anything.’”

As the story unfolds, the viewer not only learns about the individual perspectives of the involved parties but also the lasting impact on Fernando’s family and friends. The docuseries makes it clear that behind every statistic lies a personal tragedy. Graciela Sosa, grieving her only son, reflects, “When we received the news, it was something unimaginable. No mother should ever have to identify her child’s body.”

Despite the passage of time, the impacts of this case remain fresh in the minds of many as the docuseries sheds light on societal issues and the complexity of youth violence. 50 segundos: el caso Fernando Báez Sosa aims to open discussion surrounding these topics while honoring the memory of Fernando.
