Iraq, UAE Battle for World Cup Playoff Spot in Basra
Basra, Iraq – Iraq and the United Arab Emirates will meet Tuesday in a crucial return leg match for the Asia World Cup qualifying playoff, kicking off at 4 p.m. UK time. The two teams are vying for a spot in the 2026 intercontinental playoff after their first leg ended in a 1-1 draw last Thursday in Abu Dhabi.
Iraq, who previously participated in the 1986 World Cup, is attempting to return to the global stage but faces stiff competition. The Lions of Mesopotamia were close to securing an automatic qualification but lost out to Saudi Arabia on goal difference. Fans will be hopeful after seeing their team remain unbeaten in six games against the UAE.
Iraq’s positive momentum includes four wins in their last six matches, two of which were on home soil. Their past success against the UAE may provide added motivation, especially since Iraq emerged victorious during their last home fixture against the UAE in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
Despite appearing to take the lead in the first leg, the UAE’s Caio Lucas had his goal disallowed due to an offside call. Currently, the UAE is struggling for form, having not won in their last two outings, which includes a 2-1 defeat to Qatar, diminishing their chances for automatic qualification.
The UAE are looking to bounce back and make a second World Cup appearance since their first in 1990. They have scored in their last seven matches, averaging 1.7 goals per game, but will face an Iraq team known for its strong defense, with four clean sheets in their last six matches.
In terms of lineup changes, Iraq midfielder Aimar Sher will miss the game due to suspension, potentially paving the way for Zidane Iqbal to join the starting midfield. Ayman Hussein, who has scored eight goals in the qualifiers, is expected to start alongside Mohanad Ali.
Meanwhile, UAE goalkeeper Khalid Eisa, who excelled in the first leg, will again be crucial for their defense. Coach Rodolfo Arruabarrena may make adjustments, including returning Caio Canedo to lead the attack with support from Luan Pereira in midfield.
The atmosphere in Basra is expected to be electric as the home fans rally behind their team. Iraq aims to leverage their home advantage and solid defensive play to secure a victory against the UAE.
