Pluribus Episode Three Explores Themes of AI and Human Connection
ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico — The third episode of Pluribus, titled “Grenade,” aired last week and has sparked discussions about its underlying themes, particularly concerning artificial intelligence and addiction.
Writer-director Smith, a Michigan native and a veteran of Vince Gilligan‘s creative team, spoke about the episode’s intention to evoke thought rather than explicit interpretation. Smith’s experience on series like Better Call Saul has positioned him as a significant force in the narrative development of Pluribus.
The episode showcases the character Carol Sturka, portrayed by Rhea Seehorn, as she attempts to navigate a world dominated by an extraterrestrial force that has turned most of humanity into a hive mind. In a poignant scene, Carol’s interaction with Zosia, her liaison to the Joined, raises questions about the nature of knowledge and originality in a world where the boundaries of personal experience are blurred.
“I don’t think we’ll beat those [anti-AI] allegations; there are things about AI that resonate with how the Others operate,” Smith noted in an interview. He emphasized the importance of leaving themes open to interpretation to inspire viewers’ thoughts and feelings.
The show also touches on personal struggles, illustrated through Carol’s battle with addiction. With alcohol playing a crucial role in her coping mechanisms, Smith acknowledges this portrayal as a reflection of deeper issues. “There’s that pain that is so individual within you that you have to drown it with something, and that’s Carol,” he explained.
As the creative team progresses into the season’s next episodes, they remain committed to exploring complex themes without neat resolutions. Smith believes that the show’s unique conceptual nature allows for diverse interpretations, enhancing its appeal to viewers.
“My hope is that it makes people think about and feel different things in different ways,” Smith concluded, reflecting on the creative ambition behind Pluribus.
