Vitalik Buterin Calls for Ethereum Stabilization at Buenos Aires Conference
Buenos Aires, Argentina — Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, spoke at the Devconnect conference on November 18, 2025, about the need for the blockchain to stop changing its core features. He emphasized that locking down these features would help decrease bugs and improve stability in the ecosystem.
“More and more ossification over time is good for Ethereum,” Buterin stated to an engaged audience of over 500 attendees. This approach marks a significant departure from Ethereum’s original flexible model, which allowed developers to continually innovate and adapt the platform.
Buterin explained that while a locked base layer may seem less thrilling, it could protect the network, which secures billions of dollars in assets. He proposed maintaining flexibility at different layers, suggesting that the consensus layer could be fixed while allowing the Ethereum Virtual Machine to remain adaptable.
“It’s healthy to move attention out of L1 and into the surrounding ecosystem,” Buterin noted, pointing to the growing role of Layer 2 solutions that manage most of Ethereum’s transaction volume.
While advocating for stability, Buterin acknowledged the trade-offs involved. He remarked on the loss of the early “spirit of exploration” among developers, which has resulted in many pursuing ideas inspired by existing successful trends rather than innovation.
At the end of his speech, Buterin warned of looming security challenges. He highlighted concerns regarding elliptic curve cryptography, the backbone of Ethereum’s security, predicting that quantum computing advancements could jeopardize this system before the next U.S. presidential election in 2028.
Buterin concluded that if his vision is to be realized, changes would take place at the edges of the ecosystem rather than at Ethereum’s core.
