California Storm Atmospheric River Weather Alerts

LOS ANGELES, California — The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued severe weather alerts for California as an atmospheric river approaches, bringing strong winds and heavy rain through the coming days. The storm is expected to significantly impact mountain areas and urban regions alike.

Forecasters predict that the Sierra Nevada will receive up to 18 inches of snow, while the Los Angeles Basin can expect 2 to 4 inches of rain. Wind gusts may reach as high as 60 mph, raising concerns about downed trees and power lines.

“Travel could be very difficult, especially for those commuting on Friday morning,” the NWS warned. Drivers are advised to exercise caution and prepare for slick road conditions. The agency recommends that anyone who must travel keep extra supplies, such as food and water, in their vehicles.

In burn scar areas, evacuation orders have been issued due to the heightened risk of mudslides. The Los Angeles County officials stated, “Residents in these areas should gather necessary items and be ready to evacuate if conditions worsen.” Affected areas include Canyon, Bethany, Eaton, Palisades, and several others.

The storm is expected to begin impacting California late Thursday, with the heaviest rainfall anticipated on Saturday. Emergency services are on high alert as conditions can rapidly deteriorate, particularly in areas affected by recent wildfires.

As the storm approaches, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has activated the city’s Emergency Operations Center, ensuring that necessary services and resources are in place. The city is also coordinating with agencies to assist those who may need shelter during the storm.

The NWS has taken measures to prioritize safety, issuing various advisories and warnings for different regions. Coastal areas are under warnings due to dangerous ocean conditions, including high winds and rough seas.

As preparations continue, residents are urged to stay informed and heed safety recommendations as the situation evolves.
