Kelsea Ballerini Defends Art Amid Chase Stokes Reaction to Song Speculation
Nashville, TN — Kelsea Ballerini addressed speculation surrounding her new song “Emerald City” at her Mount Pleasant Experience pop-up concert on Nov. 17, stating that her music is personal, not gossip fodder.
The 32-year-old country artist performed songs from her new EP, “Mount Pleasant,” which was released on Nov. 14. During the concert, she emphasized, “I write songs to relate to, not to make a point on the internet.” Her statement was a direct response to fans theorizing that the lyrics of “Emerald City” referred to her ex-boyfriend, Chase Stokes, and his former girlfriend, Madelyn Cline.
Earlier that day, Stokes criticized the social media chatter, calling the rumors “f–king weird” and urging fans to “grow up.” Ballerini and Stokes ended their three-year relationship in September, yet recent sightings together in Croatia sparked reconciliation rumors.
Kelsea has asked for privacy regarding her personal life. Following their split, she shared a TikTok video with the caption, “Let us be. Please,” directed at speculators and paparazzi.
During the concert, Ballerini expressed gratitude to her fans, saying, “Thanks for embracing the not-so-glittery parts of me over the last few years.” She added that her intense emotions drive her to create music. Ballerini’s new EP represents her ongoing journey of personal storytelling in country music.
Fans were treated to an immersive experience at the concert, with the production studio transformed into a park-like setting featuring swing sets and artificial turf.
As the night concluded, Ballerini was visibly moved, sharing her appreciation for the support she has received from her label and creative team.
