Hong Kong Athletes Shine at 15th National Games with Record Medal Haul
Guangdong, China — Hong Kong athletes have made a remarkable impact at the 15th National Games, which are being held from November 9 to 21, with a total medal haul of 17, including eight golds. The games have attracted elite competitors from across China’s provinces, municipalities, and special administrative regions, creating a competitive atmosphere for sports enthusiasts.
As of now, Hong Kong’s athletes have excelled in multiple disciplines, bringing home medals in cycling, swimming, rugby, and fencing, among other sports. Notable performances include Nicholas Bezy Halliday who claimed Hong Kong’s first gold in the men’s ILCA 7 sailing event. Ceci Lee Sze-wing made history by securing her third individual gold medal in cycling during these games.
Hong Kong’s strong presence in swimming has also been evident. Ian Ho Yentou set a new Hong Kong record in the men’s 50-meter freestyle, finishing in 21.71 seconds. Siobhan Haughey continued her winning streak, adding two gold medals in the women’s 100-meter and 200-meter freestyle events.
In rugby, Hong Kong’s team secured its first gold in the sport by defeating Shandong with a close score of 26-19. This victory marked a significant achievement for Hong Kong’s rugby sevens team after not participating for several games.
Fencing has also proven fruitful for Hong Kong, with Aaron Ho Sze-long winning a silver medal in the men’s individual sabre, a historic first for the city in this category. Meanwhile, Kaylin Hsieh Sin-yan took home a bronze in women’s individual épée.
Triathletes from Hong Kong showcased their endurance, finishing with a silver medal in the mixed relay event, just 11 seconds behind the first-place team from Shandong. Other notable mentions include Adam Mak Sai-ting, who won a bronze in the men’s 200-meter breaststroke, achieving a new city record. The games have brought a spirit of pride and accomplishment to the region, with many athletes breaking previous records.
The 15th National Games will continue to feature various sports until November 21, culminating in a closing ceremony that promises to celebrate the achievements of all competitors.
