MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Moorhead Spuds will challenge the Edina Hornets for the 6A state championship football title at 7 p.m. Friday at U.S. Bank Stadium. As the game draws near, fans have braved the cold to support their team.

Senior player Gage Bakke expressed excitement about the upcoming game. “It’s a great opportunity to go out there and show 6A what Moorhead Football is really about. It’s just a great opportunity to go out and prove the whole state wrong,” he said.

This year marks a change in the Spuds’ schedule, as they no longer compete against teams like Alexandria and Brainerd. Dean Haugo, Moorhead High School’s Activities Director, noted that the transition has been positive. “We think we’ve learned a lot about how 6A Football operates and how we fit into that picture,” he stated. “From a travel perspective, every week is consistent. We’re down I-94 to the cities every week.”

During the season, the team has traveled over 1,400 miles for regular season games in the cities. Parents are eager to support their children despite the distance. “It’s just amazing what they’re doing. All of them are amazing boys,” said Rachel Meyer, mother of a player.

Another parent, Trisha Myklebust, added, “All the miles are worth it. My husband and I split games because we couldn’t both make it to all of them, but we made sure one of us was there.”

Bakke shared that the travel has not been draining for the players. “With 5A last year, we had to go to the cities and had long bus rides. So it’s just an extra hour. It’s been great,” he said.

Haugo emphasized the growing interest in the championship game. “What we’ve found is that once we hit the championship round, the interest sparks significantly,” he said. The Moorhead Spuds are poised and ready to make their mark on Friday’s championship game.
