Raleigh Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The holiday season officially began in Raleigh on Friday night as the city’s Christmas tree illuminated the night sky. Thousands gathered in Moore Square to witness the festive display during the tree lighting ceremony.

The event ran from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., culminating in the official lighting at 6:15 p.m. Attendees enjoyed food, drinks, and shopping from local vendors while restaurants and shops in the downtown area opened their doors to encourage early Christmas shopping.

Diane Luther attended the tree lighting and shared her excitement, saying, “I just love Christmas. I like to do any and every kind of Christmas event there is.” Many others echoed her sentiments, eager for the season’s many events.

In addition to the tree lighting, Raleigh will host its annual Christmas Parade on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. The parade route begins on Hillsborough Street, passes through downtown, and ends at Lenoir Street. The Grand Marshal for this year’s parade is a local NC State legend.

Raleigh police are ramping up staffing for the parade, emphasizing the importance of safety. They encourage families to plan ahead and remain together while attending the crowded event. Officials also urged drivers to be cautious and drive safely in areas with high pedestrian traffic.

<p“Everyone gets to enjoy their favorite parts of the gatherings, whether it's seeing familiar faces or tasting holiday treats,” said Sharon Ware, another participant at the tree lighting.

For those looking for more holiday festivities, the Triangle offers various holiday markets featuring unique gifts, crafts, and seasonal foods in Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill through January 3. City officials are excited to see the community come together to celebrate.
