Shavkat Rakhmonov Faces Setback in UFC Welterweight Rankings
Las Vegas, Nevada – Former UFC Welterweight Champion Belal Muhammad believes Shavkat Rakhmonov will need to work his way back up the welterweight rankings following an unfortunate injury. Rakhmonov was set to challenge for the welterweight title against Muhammad back in May but had to withdraw due to injury. He was replaced by Jack Della Maddalena, who ultimately defeated Muhammad.
This past Saturday at UFC 322, the welterweight division saw significant movement as Islam Makhachev emerged victorious against Maddalena, claiming the title. At the same event, Michael Morales knocked out top contender Sean Brady in the first round, and Carlos Prates scored a highlight-reel knockout against Edwards.
In a recent interview, Muhammad commented on Rakhmonov’s situation, stating, “Yeah, I think he’s for sure going to have to fight one or two more times, especially with these young guys staying active. It just sucks. His injuries plagued him. It’s hard to stay healthy in the sport, but you’ve got to feel for him.”
Rakhmonov has not competed since late 2024 when he won against Ian Machado Garry by unanimous decision. At the upcoming UFC Qatar event, Muhammad will fight Garry in a key welterweight matchup, further intensifying the competitive landscape that Rakhmonov must navigate upon his return.
Currently, Rakhmonov maintains an impressive professional MMA record of 19-0. However, without a clear timeline for his return, questions loom about his future in the sport. He will miss all of 2025, and his long absence could raise concerns about his trajectory as contenders like Morales and Prates continue to rise.
The welterweight division is heating up, especially with new talents emerging, while Rakhmonov’s perfect record remains on hold. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how this storyline unfolds.
