Patriots’ Jahlani Tavai Out for Bengals Game Due to Personal Reasons
FOXBORO, Mass. — The New England Patriots will be without linebacker Jahlani Tavai for their game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. Head coach Mike Vrabel confirmed Tavai’s absence on Friday, citing personal reasons.
Tavai, who was limited in practice earlier this week, did not participate in any capacity on Friday. Vrabel stated, “Jahlani Tavai will be out for the game. That will be non-injury related. That’s something personal, and that will be all that I’ll talk about at this time.” This news comes after Tavai previously missed four games earlier in the season due to a calf injury.
As a core special teamer, Tavai has played a significant role this season, taking up 71% of the snaps on special teams when active. Despite being a leading tackler last season, his playing time has decreased this year, and he has recorded only 19 tackles in seven games.
The Patriots have other linebackers ready to step up in Tavai’s absence. According to Vrabel, options include Bradyn Swinson and Elijah Ponder. Otis Reese may also be elevated from the practice squad to help on special teams.
New England will enter the game with some uncertainty around other players as well. Wide receiver Kayshon Boutte, running back Rhamondre Stevenson, and tight end Austin Hooper have all faced injuries but participated fully in practices on Friday.
The Bengals will also be missing key players with defensive end Trey Hendrickson and defensive end Cam Sample ruled out. Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow is questionable after limited participation due to a toe injury.
Tavai’s absence for the game will mark another hurdle for the Patriots, who are still adjusting players amid injuries this season. With Tavai sidelined, it’s imperative for the rest of the defensive squad to step up in his place.
