Dawud Burritt Jacksonville Shooting

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office announced an arrest in connection with a shooting that occurred on Sunday night at a Burger King restaurant on Blanding Boulevard.

28-year-old Dawud Burritt was taken into custody following the incident, which happened around 8:30 p.m. The shooting left 18-year-old Matthew Jackson dead and another man hospitalized with injuries, who is expected to recover.

The reason behind the shooting remains unclear. In a statement on social media, the JSO expressed condolences to Jackson’s loved ones and wished a speedy recovery for the other victim.

Jackson’s mother honored him on social media as a “good soul,” reflecting the pain felt by family and friends. Burritt’s arrest came only hours after the tragedy, demonstrating the urgency of law enforcement’s response.

“Speediness is important, but it’s not just about making an arrest,” said Crime and Safety Analyst Tom Hackney. “It’s about securing a conviction.” He emphasized that the work of homicide investigators continues until a plea deal is reached or a jury returns a verdict.

As the investigation unfolds, the JSO is asking anyone with information about the incident to contact them at 904-630-0500.
