Severe Weather Alabama Travel Impacts

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Tuesday is declared a First Warning Impact Day due to an expected wave of severe storms that could significantly affect travel across Alabama. Heavy rain and strong winds are forecasted, presenting challenges for those hitting the road ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.

As a potent cold front moves through the state, meteorologists warn that the morning brought initial heavy rains, with additional storms anticipated in the afternoon when conditions may become more unstable. This increased instability raises the potential for severe weather, which includes gusty winds and possibly hail.

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Marginal Risk for severe storms across much of Alabama, with a Slight Risk identified in central regions. The main threats are damaging wind gusts and quarter-sized hail, although the tornado risk remains low.

Travelers should prepare for difficult conditions, as rainfall could amount to 1 to 2 inches in many areas. As a result, there may be flight delays and treacherous driving situations, making it essential to monitor weather updates closely.

After the cold front passes, colder air will move into Alabama, resulting in temperatures falling below average for the Thanksgiving holiday. Daytime highs will likely be in the 50s in many communities, while some regions in Northeast Alabama could see temperatures dip into the 40s.

Following the storms, conditions are expected to dry out by Wednesday, offering a clearer outlook for Thanksgiving travels. However, residents are advised to remain vigilant as another system may bring scattered rain and thunderstorms next week. This upcoming pattern could also provide vital moisture needed to alleviate drought conditions in the area.
